Idle Warship – Habits of the Heart – November 1st, 2011

Idle Warship is a musical trio composed of Brooklyn emcee Talib Kweli, Philadelphia singer Res, and Canadian singer/rapper Graph Nobel.

After four years of independently released tracks that spread like wildfire across the web, Idle Warship will release their first official collection of songs entitled Habits of the Heart on November 1st, 2011, viaBlacksmith/Element 9/Fontana. The 12-track album has Idle Warship storming the music scene with a bold and indefinable mash-up of influences, from soul to hip-hip to alternative to electronic. Idle Warship brought an incredible range of musical sensibilities into the studio and we’ll venture to say that the output will completely blow your mind.

Idle Warship is a perfect example of how a whole can become greater than the sum of its parts – and that is saying quite a lot given the musical components of this project. A collaboration between longtime friends and collaborators, hip-hop luminary Talib Kweli and critically acclaimed soulful singer and songwriter Res, Idle Warship was born out of sheer experimentation in the studio. But some of the best things in life happen when least expected. When fans of Talib and Res heard and reacted to some online MP3s of what these two had created during their off-the-cuff sessions, it became clear that that something much bigger was brewing. Since making a huge splash at SXSW in 2009 and completing a successful European tour, Idle Warship made Party Robot – their mixtape with master DJ Mick Boogie and singer/songwriter Graph Nobel – available for free download in 2010. It only left the fans craving more, and now the wait is over!
With an obvious chemistry, a dedication to free creative expression and now a new album, Talib and Res’partnership has become a musical force to be reckoned with.

Check out the viral video for “System Addict,” a track from Habits of The Heart featuring Jean Grae and Jay Knocka.

Wack MC’s Infiltrate the BET 2011 Award Show Cypher???

Written by Ali Moody
Urbanestablished.com

Interesting things happen during my down time. Today while at work I had a few minutes to burn before my next meeting. So me being me, I pulled out my iPhone and checked the latest tweets from my Twitter account. Oddly enough I saw a tweet from @SkillzVa (better known as the Hip Hop artist Skillz) and he was tweeting about an interview he had with AllHipHop.com and that they caught him on a bad day. So @SkillzVa not mincing any words or feelings sent out a link to the article. Since Skillz is a cat from my city I wanted to know what had him sort of in spin control. Pretty much the controversial portion of the article was his remarks on how he was disappointed with a few artist and how they handled the taping of the 2011 BET Cypher. Here’s a little back story of the cypher. BET puts on the Hip Hop Awards show every year and the cypher portion which is shown between the handing out of the awards has quickly become a fan favorite. Established MC’s, new MC’s are picked to be part of the cypher and it is taped usually before the awards show. If you are a Hip Hop artist then being selected for this is kind of a big deal. It lets you know that the industry and your peers are watching. So Skillz went in and said that a few of the Mc’s were not prepared for the cypher and had to start over and over again. One could imagine if your life, profession and likely hood is being a MC, and you have been in the game – no survived the game for 15 years like Skillz had, it would only be a no brainer to come in prepared. If this is a gathering of some of the best in your profession why not come in with your A game? If I read the article correctly Skillz also stated that legendary DJ Premier was also in the house as the DJ for the cyphers and he too had to work with these MC’s as they had to start over and over on a quick verse for the cypher. I may not be knee deep in the music game and at most I am a avid Hip Hop fan, but I do know what it means to be a professional and from what I am reading it seems like all the professionals did not show up for this year’s cypher. Bravo to Skillz and his blunt honesty maybe that is why his career has lasted as long as it has.

This is honestly my opinion of an article I read….but with everything make your own decision and read it for yourself:

Here’s last years Rap Up from Skillz – something he drops every year, sort of gives a Hip Hop perspective of the past year’s events.

Hip Hop and Steve Jobs

Written by Ali Moody – Urbanestablished.com

The founder of Apple computers, Steve Jobs, died Wednesday, just a day after the launch of Apple’s newest product: the iPhone 4S. Jobs formed Apple from a Sillicon Valley garage start-up into the giant leading tech company we know today. His products, designs and company touched millions and millions of people; he was without a doubt the Thomas Edison of our time. But how or why does this passing tie into Hip Hop? As an avid Hip Hop fan I know that the culture not only rests on the music but other factors tie in that makes Hip Hop great. Hip Hop culture takes the lead in fashion, how we talk, how we interact and technology. It’s without question that Hip Hop culture loves technology and most of all being one of the first with new technology. How many studios have you been in and seen with Mac CPUs set up running all the recording equipment? How about that iPod you have hooked up, that dope iTunes library you have on deck with all of your favorite Hip Hop music. Most of the major software that Hip Hop recording artist use run on Mac protocols. The Apple company/culture has definitely played into the development and helped build Hip Hop to some degree.

Without a doubt this startup company that has its beginnings in a small garage pretty much mimics the grind that has put not only Apple on the map but Hip Hop as well. Now let me tell you why. Both Hip Hop and Apple started from nothing. No backing, no support, they were both built on a dream and on how much better they can be. Ironically the same generation that started Apple is the same generation that started Hip Hop. Both Apple and Hip Hop had their non-believers at first. They both had to go out and prove to the world that they belong and what they had to offer was not only new and exciting but something that could ultimately change lives. Today Apple is one on the biggest companies in the world and Hip Hop in a whole is billion dollar business that touches people all over the world. I know, I know a lot of people may be reading this and say this is a far stretch – but really when you think about it both Apple and Hip Hop has put in the grind over the years and from nothing they each have built each into a billion dollar business. So yeah a huge shout out to Steve Jobs and what he accomplished over his life and unknowingly he also touched the culture of Hip Hop.

In The Deck: J. Cole – “Cole World: The Sideline Story”

Written by Yodee – Hip Hop Press
It seems as though we’ve been talking about Jermaine Cole for years. Impressive guest spots and near classic mixtapes will do wonders for an artist as far as buzz is concerned. In Cole’s case, the hype machine has churned not because of self promotion or an unwarranted co-sign, but rather because of pure talent. Cole is the kind of producer/emcee double threat that is able to not only craft his own sound, but also deliver the words that match the production. As we’ve seen, it can lead to success. So as he brings us his official debut; “Cole World:The Sideline Story”, Cole strives to do what every new anointed one has tried to do: live up to the hype.

In team sports, the sign of a great player is one that makes those around him better. Cole’s seemingly effortless sample based production has warmed the ears of listeners, helping him build a following not only for him, but for others. His raw production, highlighted by his magical use of drums, pleases the ear from beat to beat. In producing all but 3 tracks on Cole World, Cole leaves nothing to chance. Tracks such as “God’s Gift”, “Sideline Story” and the standout title track “Cole World”, highlight Cole’s talent on the production side.

Since dropping The Come Up Mixtape Vol. 1 in 2007, Cole has left an impression and peaked with his arguably classic mixtape Friday Night Lights. At this point in his career, as an emcee, Cole is a more developed Kanye West. Lyrically and in his delivery, Cole delivers impassioned words, often wearing his heart on his sleeve. Introspective tracks such as “Dollar and a Dream III”, “Sideline Story”, “Lost Ones”, “Nobody’s Perfect” and No I.D. produced “Never Told” show Cole at his best. Though an emcee has to diversify material, Cole’s talents as an emcee are shown in his ability to tell a story and be introspective.

Even though it is a very strong, solid debut, Cole World does have it’s weak points. Surprisingly, the album really only has two guests, Jay-Z and Drake, on “Mr. Nice Watch” and “In the Morning”, respectively. However the guest spots are very underwhelming. Both come off as very unimpressive, as Jay sounds like he’s merely appearing to keep the Roc Nation profits up, while Drake phones it in. Neither is really Cole’s fault, but as potentially lead singles, both tracks fall flat.

Critics of Cole have described him as an impressive artist that lacks star power. Though he’s ill on the production side and talented as an emcee, some have argued that his demeanor and lack of a major hit single are what will keep him from blowing up. Talent wise, Cole laps artists that are considered to be his contemporaries, specifically Drake and Wiz Khalifa. However, his lack of self promotion and image as basically a normal dude keep him from making the next step. The same narrative can be used to describe Cole World. Production wise, the album is stout and lyrically Cole does his thing, but Cole World is another example of how impossible it is to live up to the hype machine.

In the new untitled T.I. series premiering December 5 viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at the most private and personal moments of one of today’s hottest, most sought after Grammy winning artists as he is reunited with his wife and kids and thrust back into society at this crucial juncture in his life.
